My learning journey

Family Photographer Fleet Hampshire

I have always loved photography; from the days of going to develop my films at Boots, to buying my first DSLR camera about ten years ago. I have been on a massive personal and professional journey from then until now, from reading hundreds of online resources in order to capture my growing family to launching my business and making a profession of my art.

For me over the last couple of years there have been some key light bulb moments. Learning and understanding light being top of the list, as well as making the most of colour in an outdoor setting and fine tuning my editing skills.

At my sons’ school they talk about the ‘learning pit’. This is such a good depiction of that feeling when you need to tackle a new skill. It can be a challenge to get out the other side but when you ‘get it’ you are on top of the world again and continuing along on your journey.

Over a year ago now in March 2016 I attended Nina Mace Photography’s Colour and Light workshop in Milton Keynes. Nina has always been an inspiration to me and I was (and still am) a big admirer of her work so this was an exciting moment for me. We met at Horwood House and were there for the whole afternoon and into the evening learning about making the most of different light throughout the day. The workshop was one of the key moments in my journey. I returned with a solid understanding and confidence of how to use light when photographing children and families outdoors which was an awesome feeling and has become the basis of all my work.

Here are some of my images from the workshop itself.

I have also had 1-2-1 mentoring in person and on Skype with Nina which have been invaluable. We have discussed everything from shooting techniques, marketing, SEO and editing images in Photoshop.

To anyone in the ‘learning pit’ right now in any aspect of their professional life I would say get the training, mentoring and support you need to keep going and pull yourself out the other side as it is so worth it when you get there.

I am now going to consider what is next for me in terms of my training for this year and I can’t wait to see where it takes me!
